A few months ago I was transferring my clothes from the washer to the dryer, I discovered the unexpected… my Jawbone bluetooth and a $1 bill had made it into the load of laundry, undoubtedly the result of my having forgotten to diligently check my pockets before putting my clothes in the washer.
I will spare you the expletives that I uttered upon making the discovery. The good news is the $1 bill survived, but I wasn’t so confident about my bluetooth.
After transferring my clothes to the dryer, I rushed to to my computer to do some research and to see if anyone else had been able to salvage their bluetooth after making a similar mistake. The reviews were mixed. Some were able to restore service after allowing their device to dry out, others had no such luck.
My next stop was Facebook. I posted my sad tale of Jawbone Vs. washing machine and was met with several encouraging responses from friends who encouraged me to immerse my bluetooth device in a ziploc bag of rice for a day to let it dry out. These friends comforted me with their own stories of devices accidentally washed that were salvaged by rice. So I tried it.
While I let it dry out I posted my tale on Twitter to the folks at Jawbone and committed to keeping them updated on whether or not my Jawbone worked.
After letting the device dry out for about 36 hours I charged it for about an hour. It worked like a charm! I was able to turn it on and use it just like old times. I noticed it needed more of a charge so I put it back on the charger for another hour or so. It worked for awhile, then stopped working altogether… A reminder to check your pockets before doing laundry!
